2009 ends on a high
According to leading Job Board Monster, online recruitment closed the year on a 12th-month high. Sectors that recorded
increased opportunities in December were HR, manufacturing, legal and finance. However, demand for technically skilled
workers in architecture, construction and engineering remained muted.
Regionally, Wales witnessed the largest upturn in demand but Scotland and London also saw improvements.
Again some signs that the employment market is changing for the better, positive news for job seekers entering 2010.

CV is key for August!
One thing we keep an eye on is the state of the job-market - when we are advising candidates we have to be able to offer realistic advice on which sectors are doing well and which stand less chance of job success. Although we are not yet out of the woods, there does seem to be a levelling off in the number of companies implementing a "recruitment freeze". Seasonally August is the slowest recruitment month, with factory shut downs and holidays causing delays. Key to securing the right appointment in the month ahead is by being pro-active, network, network and network more. Those who have prepared their CVs well, have a structured and well planned approach, and conducted thorough research prior to interview will be the ones that stand the greatest chance of success in the month ahead! So if you wish a review of your CV - email it to us and we will offer a free review for the months of July and August!

Analysing job offers: what to consider
We recently were asked to advise an attendee from one of our courses on how to decide between 2 job offers. Each had its own merits, but factors to consider generally cover: security, atmosphere, type of business, type of work, people working with, recognition, sense of achievement, challenge, responsibility, variety, status, personal development, advancement, variety, effect on personal life, pay and benefits. A few months later we caught up with him in his new role, he said we had missed one to consider, he went with his "gut feeling" and he was loving the job!

Umbrellas
For the start of the week, we find ourselves in polar opposites to last week. Instead of sunscreen being a necessary accessory, the need is now for umbrellas. With temperatures dropping and looking set to stay unsettled for the rest of the week, this also reflects the current state of the job market. There are rays of sunshine, with companies still actively recruiting, followed by periods of relative inactivity, when the recruitment is ongoing, but at a much reduced pace. This is when having an up-to-date, clear and concise CV, tailored specifically for the vacancy can pay big dividends.

Sun Cream
Only one hot topic necessary this week, wear sunscreen!

Should we be allowed to wear shorts in this weather?
As office workers we are all used to wearing suits, ties and business wear but in this heatwave is it more practical to be in shorts? Our Project Director bucked the trend by turning up in smart 3 quarter length trousers, and although this may be the norm for our female staff it raised a few eye brows on whether it is appropriate wear for men. Certainly as our Project Director he spends much of his time stuck in front of his PC and our Server, I'm sure he achieved much more through being cooler. Thankfully it was a one off in the heat, one saving grace that we dont have days like this very often!
